First Prom

Although I'm only writing this 2 nights after prom, it was a very long night, and I have a bad memory, so I might forget some details. I will, however, report it to you as best I can. Note: Dustin, if you read this, Loofy says thanks for being such a good friend.

I suppose when most people think of prom, they think of

  • getting all glammed up,
  • the elegance,
  • prom Kings & Queens
  • (if they have one) how their date will look,
  • dancing till the wee hours of the morning,

and (hopefully) most of all,

  • having fun with your friends.

I have to admit, my first prom was quite different. First of all, I did not act elegantly. Unless, of course, you call spilling fish on your dress and tripping over your own high heels elegant. Secondly, I didn't really have much fun, and this was basically due to the fact that that night may be the last time I would ever see my Best Friend, Loofy.

EVER.

Since it was her last night in this school, every friend of hers was crowding around her (and believe me, she's accumulated many friends as she'd been there for about 8-9 years.) This gathering and crowding was quite annoying to Jazzy and I, as both of us are her best friends and we didn't even get to say goodbye to her properly. I especially felt sorry for Jazz, because she had been friends with Loof ever since Year 3, whereas I'd only met her about a year or two ago.

A terribly awkward thing happened during dinner. They announced the nominees for Prom King and Queen, and our two friends (let's just call them 'H' and 'X') were nominated for prom King and Queen! Most of the time, this would be a good thing, but the two had just broken up after a super-serious relationship. Oh God, it was awkward.. The girls tried to comfort 'H', but I'm not sure whether the guys comforted 'X'.

As soon as the dance floor was opened, many people started dancing, except for Jazz and I. Us and our best friend Adrienne decided to try and grant Loofy her wish: to try and get this guy she likes called Sam to dance with her. I know it sounds cliché, but it turned out to be a hard thing to do. Believe me, we worked like hell to do it. The original plan was to tell him she liked him, but we thought this one was better.
So anyway, we ran all over the place (in high heels, mind you) trying to make this happen. We finally found Sam alone, and asked him to dance with her (Loofy wasn't with us when we asked, of course). He asked us why she wanted to dance with him, and we told him that he really must be thick if he couldn't figure it out. Then he said maybe he would dance with her. Adrienne left the conversation, and Jazz and I immediately questioned him why he might not dance with her, to which he answered, "No I will, it's just...the music is too loud right now. I'll wait for a slow song."

In much excitement, Jazz and I reported this to Loofy, before she was dragged away by her other friends to the dance floor. Neither Jazz nor I felt like dancing, so we played this game that Jazzy's Dad had made up when she was 3. It was really fun. Then we went to talk to our friend, who had to sit alone in the back of the room because she had a toe infection and she couldn't dance. She showed it to me, and it looked painful as hell.

Suddenly, the first song that could be classified as a slow song came on. Jazz and I charged about looking for Sam. Adrienne and our friend Rach got Loofy and we pushed Sam to the dance floor (literally). They stood there, smiling awkwardly. Jazz and I stood far away and shouted, "Come on and dance, for God sake!" and "After all that we did, you'd better dance!"
Some people however (of whom will not be named), were pushing them together on the dance floor and forcing them. Jazz and I were worried about this, because we knew it would be horrible to be forced to dance. Suddenly, Loofy walked off the dance floor, leaving Sam alone.

Jazz and I walked up to him and asked what had happened. He told us that he had asked her to dance, but she didn't want to. Jazz and I felt like swearing. I walked up to him, and he sort of shrouded backwards. "I asked her! She just--" he started, but I interrupted and said, "No, no, I just wanted to say thanks anyway."
He nodded and replied, "Ok, if you need me again, you know where to find me."
"Actually, we don't.." Jazz said.
"Just look around," he replied, and with that, we parted. We foundd Adrienne and asked her if Loofy had said anything, after telling her what Sam had said. Adrienne told us that Loofy didn't like the song. Jazz and I almost swore again. We parted with Adrienne and on the way we talked about how Loof probably also didn't want to do it because everyone was pushing her. When we got to our table, we finally got a minute alone with Loofy. Or at least we would have if someone hadn't suddenly marched through and pulled her away from us.

Jazz and I went to talk to our friend Dustin. I don't really know him well, but all I know of him is that he's really funny and smart, but on that night I discovered a whole new side of him: a kind of serious, spaced out, and really nice side. He was supposed to be Loofy's date to the prom, but since she was only to dance with Sam, he was sitting at the back, looking kinda spaced out and drinking about 3 Cokes in 5 minutes. He told us that he was trying to get drunk on them. Our friend Cat was competing with him, but not at the moment. We told him everything that had happened, and he said to us, "Well, instead of sitting here talking to me, you should be having fun with Loofy! It's her last day!" We told him that we liked sitting here and talking to him. And besides, we wouldn't want to tear her away from everyone else. As long as she's happy, so are we (well, that's sort of how we felt atthat time, anyway).
Finally Loofy came back, and I decided that Jazz should get some alone time with her, and if anybody tried to crowd them I would just tell them to bugger off. I told Loofy that she'd better go and spend some time with Jazz to say goodbye, and she agreed. When they came back, Loofy was hugging Jazz, and they went to sit down. Loofy then told us that she wanted to dance with Dustin on the next slow song, and Sam on the one after. I told Loofy that Sam told us to look for him if we needed him again, and she exploded with joy. Then she was taken back to the dance floor, and while waiting for the next slow song, Jazz and I did various good deeds. When we were outside the bathroom alone, Jazz asked me my true opinion on her. I told her I loved her (as a friend, of course) and gave her a hug.
She told me to be honest.
I told her that I was being so. That she was probably the person that I had most in common with. I'm not sure if she believed me. Jazz, if you read this, I was being honest, and I'm about to be again: Jazzy, you are such a great person and friend. You're so nice, and almost nobody else would have run around prom being a Guardian Angel with me like you did, and all for somebody else's happiness.

Anyway, we waited and waited for the next slow song, but it didn't want to come. Jazz and I decided that we would try to request 2. We weren't sure that the DJ heard us, because the music was so deafeningly loud. After a few more songs, a slow one finally came on. Jazz and I rushed around the place looking for either Dustin, Sam or Loofy. Adrienne brought Sam and Loofy to the dance floor. We put them together, and much to our happiness and relief, they started to slow dance. Jazz, Adrienne, another friend of ours called Astina and I high fived. Jazz and I exploded with happiness. Then, the two of us could finally relax and have fun, as the main thing that we had set out to achieve that day from 6.30 pm - 12.00 midnight was done. We took loads of pictures of the two dancing. Loofy danced both slow songs with Sam though, which made Jazz and I feel so sad for Dustin. A fast song came on, and Sam and Loofy continued to dance together.
Apparently, Sam told her that he wanted to talk to her on MSN now. Adrienne, Jazz and I were so happy. Although I now realise that Loofy never thanked us for our efforts, but we were happy anyway.
We also saw 'H' and 'X' dancing together, but I'm not sure whether they got back together or not. I was happy about it anyway.

My motto of this very long post: All's well that ends well.

That's basically it. I spent most of my time with Jazz that night, and throughout the time we did loads of good deeds, went to the bathroom alot, were very bored, and had many discussions, but I've left all those out and stuck to the main story.
I dropped Adrienne home that night, and she asked a very interesting question:
"Do you think that Sam and Loofy would have got together if she hadn't been leaving?"
I had to say no, because she wouldn't have any motivation to tell him she liked him if she weren't leaving. Well, that's my opinion anyway.

This is such a long post, especially since it's my first. So, I leave you at this.
